Frequently Asked Questions

How do the mixed ages work in class?
Each child develops musical, motor, and language skills at their own pace, so a 1-year-old will experience the class differently than a 3-year-old—and will also learn by observing the older children. The older children often take on leadership roles and contribute their own ideas during our musical play, which enriches the experience for everyone. With over 25 years of research and experience in early childhood music education, we know this mixed-age approach truly works! Plus, it’s wonderful for families to bring siblings together.

What if my child can't sit still in class?
We expect children to be children! They probably won’t sit in the circle for 45 minutes or participate in every activity—and that’s completely okay. Children learn through watching, listening, moving, exploring, and taking breaks when they need to. We think of class as “download time.”  Your child is observing and taking in much more than it appears. You may not see them participating in the moment, but later at home, you may notice them singing a song, trying a rhythm, or repeating something we did in class. Those moments are evidence that they were learning all along!
There’s no need to pressure your child to participate. When we give children the freedom to engage in their own way, they often surprise us with how much they’ve absorbed.

What is the class atmosphere like?
Our classes are a welcoming community of music makers! When adults actively participate, it creates a comfortable, encouraging atmosphere where children feel free to explore at their own pace. We sing, move, and play instruments like egg shakers, drums, and triangles—and our lively “jam sessions” at the end of class are always a highlight!

What kind of music do you use?
We use a rich mix of multicultural songs, rhythmic chants, rhymes, and songs without words—an approach that helps children learn best! Each 10-week session includes a 25-song album download featuring all the music from class, along with an illustrated songbook and musical scores. Every session features a unique song collection, and the collections rotate on a three-year cycle.

Do infants really benefit?
Absolutely! Just like learning language, infants may “participate” very little during the first six months to a year, but without this early exposure, their speech development would be delayed. While their participation might seem passive, they are actively absorbing everything they see, hear, and feel—building the foundation they’ll need as their bodies and nervous systems mature.

Can a different adult attend class with the child?
Absolutely! Caregivers, parents, grandparents—all are welcome. Siblings up to 9 months old attend free. As long as the adult actively engages in the class, the child will benefit from their presence.
